Electrical Engineering Studies

I studied within 1981 and 1987 electrical engineering at the Technical University in Braunschweig, Germany. After the basic study terms I specialized on the subject of control algorithms. My teacher for control and electrical drives was Prof. Dr. Eng. Dr. h.c. W. Leonhard.

Dissertation

After receiving my M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering, I was employed 1987 by the IAM GmbH, which in 1996 became SICAN GmbH in Braunschweig. The company is located next to the electrical department of the Technical University where I did my studies. I was offered the opportunity to make my Ph.D. degree in technical science at IAM under the condition, that I find a subject within my professional work. I specialized on the development of digital control algorithms for power supplies and electrical drives connected to three phase grids. Between 1994 and 2000 I worked parallel on my thesis and received my Ph.D. degree in 2000. My thesis was the control of a wire pull plant without pull force sensors. The work was done under the advisors Prof. Dr. Eng. W. Schumacher (TU Braunschweig) and Prof. Dr. Eng. habil G. Brandenburg (TU München).

Professional Experience

From the beginning of my professional work I was involved in the development and system integration of control algorithms for industrial systems applications with electric drives. The vision of IAM GmbH was to be the link between university and industry, so to help the small and medium sized industries to come up with new products which are beyond the state of the art. By this I gained my experience within a wide range of industrial applications for electric drives and power supplies. Since 1993 until its discontinuation in 2001 I used the control design simulator MATRIXx/SystemBuild. It was together with Matlab/Simulink the leading development tool for control algorithms. Since 2002 I support my developments with Matlab/Simulink. On the basis of my practical industrial experience in system integration, I deliver with the simulator highly reliable feasibility checks and designs of control algorithms. This makes it possible to deliver first time right products. In the meanwhile I have developed very precise drive, pwm and position sensor models, which allow me to develop control solutions which run at the customers testbench without my personal attendance during system integration.

Since the start of the year 2002 I offer my services self employed. This gave me the opportunity to create optimized working conditions with a significant rise in efficiency, flexibility and integrity.
